27 - ALL SAINTS JAZZ CONCERT - Deater O'Neill & Mike Crotty Quintet

Mike Crotty and Deater O’Neill began their musical partnership in the early 1980s, featuring his work as a composer/arranger and multi-instrumentalist, her vocals and a great trio. Their very first public appearance was a performance at the Kool Jazz Festival held at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.

They perform a combination of original music, jazz standards, and the great music and lyrics of the American Popular Songbook. Often using O’Neill’s voice as a second horn, Crotty’s writing talents have created their distinctive horn/vocal sound—a sound unlike any other in the Southwest.

Mike Crotty and his music can be heard in a wide variety of forums. Crotty plays the saxophone, flute, trumpet, and flugelhorn and has performed with a diverse group of prominent entertainers, including Tony Bennett, Dizzy Gillespie, Joe Williams, Sarah Vaughan, Ray Charles, Diana Ross, Mel Torme, Natalie Cole, The Temptations, and the National Symphony Pops Orchestra.

Deater O’Neill began making her mark as a well respected musician in Washington, D.C. Her varied singing career has taken her from operatic roles and recitals to 18 months in the national touring company for the musical “Hair,” traveling throughout the Midwest and east coast. O’Neill found her real vocal strength in the American popular song and began her career as a swing-styled jazz singer. In addition to her extensive work with the Crotty & O’Neill Quintet, she was featured by the Smithsonian Institution in a solo concert of the song of the swing era’s female vocalists.

Cited by Washington Magazine as one of “Washington’s best women voices.” Special performance highlights include three Cherry Blossom Festival Balls and four Presidential inaugural Balls for former Presidents Reagan, Clinton, and Bush, Sr. Please join us on Sunday, April 27, 2008, at 6:30pm, to see Crotty and O’Neill.
