2009-2010 Season Our first concert was August 30, at 6:30 p.m. Fantastic music by Raul Yanez and his Trio. This was a pre-season event -- sort of a teaser for the regular season. Ticket information at the bottom of this page. Were you with us Sunday night? Wow!! Margo never disappoints -- and we heard Jerry sing on one of the numbers -- a first. A lovely night - perfect weather -- and terrific music. Well -- even if you weren't back in town in time, you can still schedule the rest of the series. We hope to see you next on November 1. November 1 - 6:30 p.m. - Sun City Stomperz. If you're looking for an excuse to kick up your heels and clap your hands, don't miss this New Orleans style Dixieland Jazz group. This West Valley group organized just a few years ago, but bring many years of experience to their performances. They have a serious objective in preserving and perpetuating traditional jazz as an art form and will perform many pieces from the 20's and 30's.
December 6 - 6:30 p.m. - Paul-Eirik Melhus. Featured twice in the "Catch a Rising Star" series at ASU's Kerr Cultural Series, this 17-year-old Senior from Ironwood H.S. and his quartet will dazzle you. He began playing tenor sax at the age of 10 and played with the Young Sounds of Arizona under the direction of Barb Cartlin for 4 years. Two years ago, Paul was invited to play with the Jazz Band of America in Indianapolis with guest performer Wynton Marsalis. The past two summers he has been accepted into the Brubeck Summer Jazz Institute and has played with such memorable faculty members as Frank Morgan and Ed Soph.
January 24 - 6:30 p.m. - Alice Tatum. A true showman, multi-talented Alice Tatum has been a Valley favorite for more than 30 years. No matter the genre of music, Alice seems comfortable with it. She also appears with her own band as well as her single performances. She is well known for her work with charities such as the Arthritis Foundation, Make a Wish and STARS, and often appears at corporate events. Alice has worked with such performers as Neil Sadaka, Rod Stewart, Rita McIntyre, and Burt Reynolds to name just a few. Did you miss this one? This lady sings everything! Wonderful voice -- some duets - some great instrumentals by her terrific trio. Anywhere you have a chance to hear her -- run, do not walk -- for it will be a memorable event.
March 7 - 6:30 p.m. - Mike Kocour. The Chicago Tribune calls Mike "one of the most sophisticated pianists in jazz." Performing around the world as well as special guest on NPR's Marian McPartland's "Piano Jazz" show, he also performs with such notables as Dizzy Gillespie, James Moody, and Carl Fontana. Assistant Professor and Director of Jazz studies at ASU, Mike was awarded the Herberger College of Fine Arts Distinguished Teacher Award for 2004-05.
April 11 - 6:30 p.m. - Augie Mendoza & Richie Orpeza. We end our season with that great performer and pianist better known as "The Aug" and Richie Opreza on the Vibraphones.
